meaning

A prodigal son refers to anyone who has been wayward. The return of a prodigal son is a return to a better way of living.

origin and application

In the Book of Luke, Jesus told a parable about a prodigal son. He spent all the money given by his father while he was away from home. But when he returned home, his father, filled with compassion for him, ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him. He forgave what his son has done, and even celebrated his return with a great feast.
