在旧约时代，以色列人收割后把初熟的庄稼用以敬奉上帝，以求得庇佑。上帝对当时的先知亚伦许诺，说：“凡从他们地上所带来给耶和华初熟之物也都要归与你。你家中的洁净人都可以吃All the land’s first fruits that they bring to the Lord will be yours. Everyone in your household who is ceremonially clean may eat it”。（民数记18：13） 这个习语沿用至今，初熟之物意旨事情初见成果。
