Matthew 1:16

meaning

The name is the English form of “Maria” which is the Latinate form of the Greek names Μαριαμ (Mariam) and Μαρια (Maria) derived from the Hebrew name מִרְיָם (Miryam). “Mary” carries several meanings such as “sea of bitterness”, “rebelliousness” and “wish for a child”.
In the New Testament, the most famous bearers of the name were the virgin mother of Jesus Matthew 1:16) and Mary Magdalene (Matthew 27:56), a devoted follower of Jesus and a witness to His crucifixion and resurrection.
